Former Mayor Larry W. Robertson passed away Thursday, February 21st after succumbing to an ongoing terminal illness.  Robertson served the City of Quitman as an Alderman from 1990-1997, Mayor Pro-Tem during 1997, and as Mayor from 1997-2007.

During his tenure, he secured the Governor Jim Hogg Park for the City and worked to develop and secure grant funding for the development of Heritage Youth Sports Park and the City Swimming Pool.  His father Frank Robertson, who currently serves as the City’s Board of Adjustments Chairman and previously as a Council member for the City of Grand Prairie, said “Larry was always working for the citizens and doing his best to respond to their desires.  He served people because that’s what he knew to do.”

Prior to moving to East Texas, Robertson was in law enforcement with the Arlington Police Department and also served with the Wood County Sheriff’s Department, Upshur County Sheriff’s Department, and Sulphur Springs PD.  He also worked as the Sales Manager at Quitman Ford before opening Larry Robertson’s Auto Sales which 8he operated in Quitman until recently.

Mayor Pro-Tem J.R. Evans said of the former Mayor, “Larry loved Quitman and wanted to maintain the quality of life for all its citizens.  He worked hard and was passionate about what he and the City could do for people, especially when it came to the park and park services.”

Mayor Pro-Tem Evans has ordered flags at all City owned facilities to half staff through Wednesday morning at 8am in honor of former Mayor Robertson’s dedicated service to Quitman and respect for his family and encourages all within the community to do likewise.

Services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2PM at the First Baptist Church of Quitman with Visitation on Saturday evening from 5-7 PM at Lowe’s Funeral Home.

The family suggest memorials to the Quitman Library, Quitman Fire Department, or Reflection Hospice.
