Released by U.S. Congressman Jeb Hensarling
As you may know, the recent “fiscal cliff” deal temporarily delayed the sequester required under the Budget Control Act, which was signed into law by President Obama on August 2, 2011. If current law is not changed, these across-the-board spending cuts will be enforced this Friday, March 1, resulting in an approximately 8% cut to the Department of Defense and a 5-6% cut to non-defense discretionary spending, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
I know that we cannot solve our nation’s debt crisis by cutting the Pentagon. That is why I have twice voted with my House Republican colleagues to replace the arbitrary sequester cuts with targeted, common-sense spending reductions that do not threaten our national security. I remain committed to replacing the impending sequester with fiscally responsible alternatives that will contain the same level of spending reduction agreed to under the Budget Control Act, while ensuring the safety of our nation without raising taxes on hard-working American families.
