tdMotor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children 14 years old or younger, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to stop by the free Car Seat Checkup event Saturdayto talk with certified technicians who will inspect their child seats for proper installation, expiration and recalls.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), roughly three out of four child safety seats are not used correctly. In fact, NHTSA says while most parents are confident they have correctly installed their child’s car seat, more than 50 percent have not.

Texas law requires children younger than 8 (unless they are taller than 4 feet 9 inches) to be in a child safety seat whenever riding in a passenger vehicle. Knowledge of the law, proper seat selection, installation and use, are key when it comes to making sure children are safely secured in vehicles. TxDOT’s child safety seat inspection program offers free seat checks year-round at its 25 statewide district offices. Contact your local TxDOT office to schedule an appointment.

(TxDOT) is partnering with Nurse-Family Partnership, Christus Good Shepherd Health System and KidSafe to host a free child car seat checkup event aimed at helping parents and caregivers ensure children are properly restrained when riding in a vehicle. Bring the child and current car seat. The event will run Saturday, April 29 from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m.
